Buy a Buoyancy Aid — swimming aid for water sports enthusiasts
A buoyancy aid is a swimming aid for people who want extra safety on the water. Unlike a lifejacket it does not automatically turn an unconscious wearer face-up. There are three main types: nylon, neoprene and impact vest.
| Type | Material | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Nylon | Nylon | Affordable, recreational, beginners |
| Neoprene | Neoprene | Comfortable, water sports, all day |
| Impact vest | EVA hard foam | Kitesurfing, wakeboarding, crash protection |

Buoyancy aid vs lifejacket
A buoyancy aid has no collar and turns the wearer face-down — suitable for swimmers in sheltered water. A lifejacket has a collar, automatically turns an unconscious person face-up, and is designed for open water, children and boating.
Frequently asked questions
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between a buoyancy aid and an impact vest?
A buoyancy aid provides flotation. An impact vest also has a hard EVA layer that absorbs impacts and protects the ribs. CE-certified impact vests are also approved as buoyancy aids.
How do I find the right size?
Check chest circumference and weight against the size chart. Thumb test: the vest should not slide over your head. Neoprene shrinks slightly when wet.
Which buoyancy aid is best for kitesurfing?
An impact vest with a hard EVA core protects on crashes, fits well under a harness and won’t ride up. Look for CE 50N certification for on-board use.
Should I wear a buoyancy aid if I’m a strong swimmer?
Cold shock, fatigue, currents and waves are independent of swimming ability. On open water wearing a buoyancy aid is always the sensible choice.
