Which Newton level do I need?
| Level | Application | Example models |
|---|---|---|
| 50N (swimming aid) | Sheltered water, strong swimmer, conscious use | Free100 Inflatable |
| 100N (basic) | Sheltered water, children, inland waters | Bravo Kid, Vivo, Impact vest |
| 150N (standard) | Inland waters and coastal sailing, normal clothing | Secufit |
| 170-220N | Open water, rough weather, with sailing clothing | Ultra, Arkona |
| 275N (heavy) | Offshore, heavy clothing, severe conditions | Survival, Scout, Arkona Duo |
A higher Newton classification means more buoyancy and turns an unconscious wearer more quickly into the stable back-floating position. In thick winter clothing, choose one level higher than in the same conditions with thin clothing. The Secufit and Survival models feature a breathable mesh lining and a fleece collar to prevent chafing. Also check out the broader lifejacket collection, the range of children's lifejackets and the automatic lifejackets from other brands.
Frequently asked questions about Secumar lifejackets
When should I wear a lifejacket on the water?
In the Netherlands there is no general statutory obligation to wear lifejackets on recreational craft, but local authorities may require this on specific waters or for certain vessels. For children under 12, a wearing requirement applies in many locations. Regardless of the rules, it is strongly recommended to wear a vest in bad weather, on open water away from the coast, when night sailing and when sailing single-handed. For active sailing choose an automatic or semi-automatic inflatable vest of at least 150N.
How do I maintain a Secumar inflatable lifejacket?
Inspect the vest every year before the sailing season. Check the CO2 cylinder for damage and the expiry date, and check the activation mechanism for signs of moisture or discolouration. After use in salt water, rinse the vest with fresh water and let it dry completely, away from direct sunlight and heat. Have the vest serviced by an accredited service point every three years, or immediately after automatic inflation for replacement of the cylinder and activation mechanism.
