The NCX is by far the most requested Severne sail with us, followed by the Gator for recreational inland riders and the Blade for saltwater wave sessions.
Masts and booms
Severne masts come in RDM (Reduced Diameter Mast) and SDM (Standard Diameter Mast). RDM masts are thinner, stronger in crashes and ideal for wave and freestyle. SDM masts give more performance on large sails and are standard for slalom and race. The Gorilla and Apex models are high-end carbon masts. Booms Metal and Enigma come in various length ranges. Frequently asked questions about Severne
Which Severne sail suits my level?
For beginners on inland water the S-1 or Convert is the right start: easy handling, wide wind range and affordable. For intermediate freeride riders the Gator is the natural choice with allround character. Riders who want more speed without maintaining cambers go for the NCX. Wave riders choose the Moto as an intermediate step or directly the Blade as the goal. Junior Redback is for kids up to around 50 kg body weight. Rule of thumb for sail area in m²: body weight in kg divided by 11 in average wind of 4-5 Bft.
What is the difference between SDM and RDM mast?
SDM has a larger diameter (around 48 mm at the top) and gives a stiffer curve with better performance on race and cam sails. RDM has a smaller diameter (around 34 mm) so the mast flexes a bit more but is much stronger in crashes and impacts. For wave and freestyle, RDM is standard. For freeride 5.0 to 7.5 m² both work, but most modern freeride sails specify RDM. Cam sails and slalom sails above 8.0 m² require SDM. Always check in the sail bag which mast type the sail specifies.
Which boom length for my sail?
The correct boom length is stated in the sail bag as adjustment range. The Severne Metal boom covers popular freeride ranges 140-190 cm and 170-220 cm. The Enigma is a carbon boom with a smaller adjustment range per size variant but lighter and stiffer than Metal. Choose a boom where your sail's clew length lies roughly in the middle of the adjustment range: that gives you margin upwards and downwards across multiple sail sizes. A boom that's too long on a small sail flexes more and loses power transfer.
Does an NCX fit a freeride board?
Yes, the NCX is specifically designed as a freerace sail for modern freeride boards like the Severne Fox or Starboard Carve and Futura. For the combination, choose the sail area based on wind strength and body weight: an NCX 7.0 m² is a popular allround size for 75-85 kg riders in 4-6 Bft. Combine with a matching RDM mast (NCX sails usually require RDM, check the sail bag) and a boom with enough adjustment range to match the clew length exactly.
