Windsurfing

Windsurfing: sport, equipment and everything you need

Windsurfing combines the balance of surfing with the power of the sail. On a board with a sail, you use the wind as your engine: you steer with the sail, balance with your body and are propelled by the force of the wind. Windsurfing is a sport for every level, from complete beginner on a calm lake to racing sailor in open sea.

Component Function Selection criterion
Board Stability and buoyancy Volume based on body weight and skill level
Sail + mast Power and propulsion Sail size based on wind strength; SDM vs RDM mast based on sail type
Boom Control of the sail Carbon for low weight; aluminium for cost efficiency
Harness Power transfer from hands to hips Waist harness for more freedom; seat harness for more support
Fin Grip on the water and directional stability Size depending on board and discipline
Wetsuit + impact vest Warmth and protection Thickness based on water temperature

Disciplines in windsurfing

Freeride is the most popular discipline: versatile and suitable for most waters. Wave windsurfing combines the sport with wave riding. Slalom and race is about maximum speed. Freestyle is the acrobatic side. Foil windsurfing is the fastest-growing discipline: a foil lifts the board above the water surface, enabling high speeds with little wind.

Brands and range: Starboard, Severne, STX and Prolimit

Starboard is the world market leader in windsurf boards, from the GO beginner board to the iSonic for slalom and race. Severne specialises in windsurf sails from entry freeride to race sails. STX is the most accessible brand with boards and accessories for beginners and youth. Prolimit provides wetsuits, harnesses, impact vests and accessories.

Choosing board and sail: the starting point for every windsurfer

Rule of thumb for beginners: body weight in kg × 1.5 to 2 = minimum board volume in litres. A beginner weighing 75 kg should choose at least 110 to 150 litres. Sail size in square metres depends on wind strength in your area and your body weight.

Frequently asked questions about windsurfing

What do I need to start windsurfing?
A beginner board with sufficient volume (at least body weight × 1.5 litres), a small sail (4–5m²), a matching mast, a boom and a wetsuit suited to the water temperature.
What board volume do I need as a beginner?
Rule of thumb: body weight in kg × 1.5 to 2 = minimum volume in litres. A beginner of 75 kg chooses 110–150 litres. More volume means more stability when learning.
What is the difference between SDM and RDM mast?
SDM is thicker and stiffer, suitable for freeride and race sails. RDM is thinner and more flexible, standard for wave and freestyle sails. The choice is determined by the sail, always check the mast specifications.
How do I choose the right windsurfing harness?
Waist harness for more freedom of movement (experienced windsurfers). Seat harness for more support (beginners and long sessions). Adjust hook height to navel level.
