Buy windsurf board
A windsurf board is the foundation of your windsurfing set: the floating element you stand on that converts wind into movement together with the rig (mast, sail and boom). Windsurfboards are available for every level and every riding style: from wide, stable beginner boards with high volume to narrow race and wave boards for advanced riders. At Watersportsonline you will find boards for freeride, freerace, wave and foilsurfing, in constructions ranging from fibreglass to carbon.
Windsurfboard types by level and style
| Type | Volume | Level | Riding style |
|---|---|---|---|
| Beginner board (GO series) | 130-220 litres | Beginner | Learning to windsurf, inland water, daggerboard |
| Freeride (Carve) | 90-170 litres | Intermediate | Everyday freeride, gybe and planing |
| Freerace (Futura) | 100-140 litres | Intermediate | Straight-line speed, long distance |
| Wave (Kobe) | 70-100 litres | Intermediate to pro | Wave riding, manoeuvrability |
| Freestyle (Kode) | 85-110 litres | Intermediate | Tricks and freestyle manoeuvres |
| Foil-ready / inflatable | Variable | All-round | Foiling or travel with inflatable board |
Choose the board type based on your level and how you want to windsurf. For beginners more volume is always better. Combine your board with a matching windsurf boom and windsurf mast from the full windsurf range.
Choosing volume: the rule of thumb
The volume of a windsurfboard determines its buoyancy. Rule of thumb for beginners: choose a volume equal to twice your body weight in kilograms. At 70 kg that means a board of around 140 litres as a starting point. Experienced planing windsurfers choose body weight plus thirty to sixty litres, depending on wind and skill level.
Frequently asked questions about windsurf boards
Which windsurf board is suitable for beginners?
A wide board with high volume (130 litres and above) is the best choice for beginners. Wide boards are more stable and give more time to find your balance. Choose a board with a daggerboard slot for your first lessons: a daggerboard provides extra stability at low speed and helps with learning to tack. Once you can comfortably plane and gybe, you can progress to a narrower freeride board with less volume for more speed and responsiveness.
How do I determine the right volume for my windsurfboard?
The rule of thumb is body weight in kg plus thirty to sixty litres for recreational freeride planing. A 75 kg rider would choose a board of 105 to 135 litres in average wind. In more wind or at a more advanced level, go for less volume; in less wind or at beginner level choose more volume. Beginners start at twice their body weight in litres. The number in the model name indicates the volume in litres.
What is the difference between fibreglass, Wood Sandwich and carbon construction?
Fibreglass boards are the most affordable and most durable construction, ideal for beginners who fall regularly. Wood Sandwich has a wooden core with fibreglass laminate: lighter than pure fibreglass with a livelier feel on the water. Carbon boards use carbon fibres for the lightest possible construction with maximum stiffness and speed, but are also the most expensive and most vulnerable to hard impacts. Choose fibreglass or Wood Sandwich for recreational use; carbon is an upgrade for advanced riders who want to save every gram.
What is a foil-ready windsurfboard?
A foil-ready board is fitted with a deep tuttle box or a special foil slot into which you can fit a hydrofoil (underwater wing). With a foil, the board flies above the water, enabling extremely light wind conditions and higher speeds than conventional windsurfing. Foil boards are for experienced windsurfers, not suitable for beginners.
