Watersports sunglasses for optimum vision on the water
Water reflects up to 100 percent of sunlight, which means UV exposure on the water is two to three times higher than on land. Ordinary sunglasses provide insufficient protection on the water and do not filter reflected light adequately. Watersports sunglasses are specifically designed for use on and around the water: with polarisation that eliminates horizontal reflections, UV400 protection that blocks all UV radiation, a frame that stays put in wind and movement, and materials resistant to salt water and UV radiation.
The right pair makes the difference between tired squinting after a session and sharp, clear vision throughout the whole day on the water.
| Feature | Description |
|---|---|
| Polarised lens | Eliminates reflected light, reduces glare on the water, better colour perception in changing light conditions |
| UV400 protection | Blocks all harmful UV-A and UV-B radiation, essential for prolonged time on the water |
| Rubber or flexible frame | Absorbs shocks, fits better on neoprene or helmet attachment, stays in place during movement |
| Floating glasses cord or retainer | Prevents loss if the glasses fly off in strong wind or a fall |
| Goggle / protective eyewear | Fully enclosed, no spray or wind reaching the eyes |
Polarised lens vs standard UV filter
A standard UV filter blocks UV radiation but allows glare through. The light reflected from the water surface is predominantly horizontally polarised. That is precisely the radiation that causes the most trouble when looking on and over the water.
A polarised lens has a special layer that filters horizontal light waves. As a result the glare from the water surface virtually disappears. This gives calmer vision, less eye fatigue during extended use and better visibility in and under the water. For watersport, polarised is clearly the better choice. Note that polarised lenses can make LCD screens on GPS devices or smartphones harder to read due to the filtering effect.
How to store and maintain watersports sunglasses
Rinse the glasses with clean fresh water after use in salt water to prevent salt deposits. Use a soft microfibre cloth to clean the lenses. Hard or rough cloths can damage the polarisation coating, so always use the supplied cloth or a suitable lens cloth.
Store the glasses in a hard-case eyewear box, not loose in a bag or harness. Check the screws on the frame each season for looseness and tighten as needed. Replace the nose bridge or ear tips when worn to maintain fit and comfort.
Frequently asked questions about watersports sunglasses
Why is a polarised lens better for on the water?
Polarised lenses eliminate horizontal light reflections from the water surface. This significantly reduces glare and gives calmer, sharper vision without needing to squint. During extended sailing, kitesurfing or motorboating this prevents eye fatigue. For watersport, polarisation is the standard choice over a plain UV filter.
How do I stop my sunglasses falling in the water?
Use a floating glasses cord or retainer attached to the frame. A floating cord ensures the glasses stay on the water surface if they do fall off. Make sure you have a good fit so the glasses do not blow off your head at speed or in wind. A frame with rubber coating or an integrated sports attachment gives extra grip during active watersport.
What is the difference between sunglasses and goggles for watersport?
Sunglasses are open: wind, spray and droplets can enter from the sides. Suitable for sailing, motorboating and SUP in normal conditions. Goggles are fully enclosed around the eyes so no water or wind reaches the eyes. Ideal for high-speed watersport such as kitesurfing, water skiing and wakeboarding where splash and wind are more intense.
Are all watersports sunglasses compatible with a helmet?
Not all models are compatible with a watersports helmet. Choose a slim frame without lenses that are too large and fall outside the helmet margin. Read your helmet specifications for eyewear compatibility. Some helmets have a dedicated slot for the glasses frame for a better fit and firmer hold.
