Frequently asked questions about Prolimit surf shoes

What is the difference between Split Toe and normal surf shoe?

Split Toe has a separate compartment for the big toe, similar to a Tabi sock. This gives extra grip and control on the board because you can move the big toe independently for balance, and reduces the chance of slipping on a wet board grip. Normal (closed toe) surf shoes are warmer and quicker to put on. For wave surfing and kitesurfing where foot positioning is critical, many surfers choose Split Toe.

What do GBS, Armoured, XGRIP and FTM mean?

GBS stands for Glued Blind Stitched: a seam construction where neoprene edges are first glued and then stitched with a hidden stitch so no water seeps through the seam. Armoured stands for reinforced wear zones on heel and toes. XGRIP is a special rubber grip sole from Prolimit with deeper grooves for extra grip on wet gelcoat and rocks. FTM (Foot Memory) is an inner lining that remembers the shape of your foot for improved comfort.

How do I size a Prolimit surf shoe?

Prolimit surf shoes are sold in standard European shoe sizes, but run slightly narrower than a normal walking shoe. When in doubt between two sizes choose the smaller — neoprene stretches in use, and a shoe that's too large gives less grip and a colder feel because water can come between your foot and the shoe. For 5mm or thicker with FTM lining take your normal size, because the FTM adapts to your foot in the first sessions.

How do I care for my Prolimit surf shoes?

Rinse with fresh water after every saltwater session, also inside the shoe. Let the shoes dry slowly in the shade, not in direct sun or near a radiator. Direct dry heat drastically shortens the lifespan of neoprene and the glued GBS seams. Store the shoes dry with the opening pointing upward so they retain their shape.
