Boat steering cable
A boat steering cable transmits steering wheel movements to the outboard motor's steering pin. It runs through a helm station. Wear, corrosion or kinks lead to vague steering or steering failure. Find M58 standard cables for engines up to 55 hp and stainless M66 for heavier engines.
Which steering cable do I need?
| Standard | Engine power | Material |
|---|---|---|
| M58 | Up to 55 hp | Steel with PVC sleeve |
| M66 Stainless | From 55 hp | Stainless steel |
M58 and M66 are not interchangeable. Always check your helm station standard. Complete steering systems in the steering system collection.
Frequently asked questions
How long should my steering cable be?
Measure the route from helm to motor and add 30-50 cm for bends. Too short causes steering restriction. Too long causes kink risk. Never route cable across the boat without guides.
How long does a steering cable last?
Average 5-8 years. Inspect annually for kinks, corrosion and increased resistance. Lubricate regularly with marine grease. Also check the steering wheel for wear.
Can I replace a steering cable myself?
Yes. Photograph the routing first. Disconnect old cable and pull back through guides. Thread new cable along same route. After installation check full steering path and align motor to straight ahead. More in our boat accessories collection.
