Boat repair materials
Boat repair starts with the right material for your hull type. PVC, neoprene, hypalon, polyester and wood each need their own adhesive, filler or repair method. Using the wrong product leads to poor adhesion and a repair that quickly fails. At Watersportsonline you'll find repair sets, adhesives, cleaners and fillers for all common boat types.
Which repair material suits your boat?
| Material | Boat type | Repair product |
|---|---|---|
| PVC | Inflatable boat, RIB | PVC adhesive and repair set |
| Neoprene / Hypalon | Inflatable rubber boat | Neoprene/hypalon adhesive |
| Polyester / fibreglass | Dinghy, motorboat, sailing boat | Polyester filler |
| Wood | Classic dinghy, sailing boat | Wood filler / epoxy |
Not sure about your boat's material? Check the manufacturer documentation or do an acetone test: PVC dissolves slightly on contact, hypalon and neoprene do not. Find finishing products in our boat cleaning collection.
When a repair set, when loose adhesive?
Loose adhesive works when you already have repair cloth. Repair sets include everything: adhesive, cloth patches and cleaner. For larger repairs sets provide more material. Always degrease with cleaner first for lasting adhesion.
Frequently asked questions about boat repair
How do I repair a hole in a PVC inflatable?
Clean the damaged area with PVC cleaner and let it dry completely. Cut a PVC patch with at least 3 cm overlap on all sides and rounded corners. Apply two layers of PVC adhesive to both patch and boat, letting each layer dry 5 to 10 minutes until tacky but not liquid. Press firmly from the centre outwards to remove air bubbles. Leave to cure for at least 24 hours before inflating.
Can I repair an inflatable after it has been in water?
Yes, but the surface must be completely dry first. Allow at least 48 hours drying time in a warm, dry space. Never repair below 10 degrees as adhesive won't bond properly. Use the cleaner thoroughly for best adhesion on a boat that has been wet for a long time.
How do I repair a damaged polyester hull?
Use polyester filler for scratches and porosity in a polyester or fibreglass hull. Clean and dry the surface, apply filler with a spatula, let it cure, then sand from coarse to fine. The repair is then ready for primer or paint. See our boat paint collection for paints and varnishes.
How long does repair adhesive last after opening?
Generally 6 to 12 months with correct storage. Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and always close tightly after use. Air in a partly used tube accelerates curing. Transfer leftovers to a smaller, well-sealed container to extend shelf life. Check before each season whether the adhesive is still liquid and homogeneous.
