What mooring line diameter do I need for my boat?
Rule of thumb: choose a diameter equal to one third of your boat length in metres times 4 mm. A 6-metre sloop fits an 8 mm mooring line, a 10-metre motor boat fits 10 or 12 mm. The 16-strand version has more elasticity than 3-strand and is better for long bow lines in strong winds because shocks are absorbed better. For permanent slips in smaller harbours with small sterns, the 12 mm 16-strand is the standard starting point. Combine with an anchor lead line of 10 or 12 mm for the anchor connection, not for mooring.
What is the difference between 3-strand and 16-strand?
3-strand rope consists of three intertwined strands and is harder, cheaper and easier to splice. 16-strand is braided from 16 strands, stays more supple in the hand, wears less quickly on the cleat and absorbs shocks better. For permanent slips, use 16-strand for durability; for reserve lines or short-term use, 3-strand suffices. Both versions at Hollex are UV-resistant and suitable for fresh and salt water.
Which boat flag should I fly?
In the Netherlands you fly the Dutch tricolour (red-white-blue) on the stern of your boat, on a flagstaff. The navy blue variant traditionally applies to navy yachts or navy associations, not recreation. Abroad you fly the courtesy flag (small at the top of the mast or for motor boats on the starboard staff) of the country where you sail, so Belgium in Belgian water, France in French water. The Frisian flag or provincial flag is flown as a club flag or front flag on the bowsprit or mast foot, not as the main flag.
Which refrigerator fits my boat?
The Hollex refrigerators with LG compressor run on 12 or 24V and consume little enough to run on the ship's battery without quickly draining it.
