In 1877, Captain Helly Juell Hansen recognized the need for better protection against the harsh Norwegian elements. He and his wife, Maren Margarethe, began soaking coarse linen with linseed oil. Working from their basement, the innovative and hardworking duo tirelessly created workwear designed for long days at sea.
