An outboard motor lock is a steel clamp that secures the outboard motor to the boat's transom so it cannot simply be lifted off. Outboard motors are attractive theft targets because of their high value and relatively low weight. A good lock keeps the motor in place whether the boat is moored at a pontoon or left unattended on a trailer. Stainless steel or SCM-certified?
The HIBO lock is stainless steel, making it corrosion-resistant and well suited for saltwater use. The SCM-certified locks from Lockk and DoubleLock are harder and more resistant to cutting and forcing. For marinas, public car parks or longer unattended periods, SCM is the better choice. Frequently asked questions about outboard motor locks
How does an outboard motor lock work?
The lock clamps around the transom and the motor's mounting bracket. The steel bracket connects motor and transom in a way that cannot be released without the key. After fitting, push the motor to check it cannot rotate or be lifted. Most models fit universally on standard transoms. The Long version is designed for taller transoms on larger boats and rigid inflatables with a sturdy aluminium transom.
Will an outboard motor lock fit my motor?
In most cases, simply yes. The locks in our range fit virtually all standard outboard motors and transoms. If you have an unusually large or tall transom, the DoubleLock Outboard Lock Long is the right choice. Not sure? Just send us the motor type and we'll check for you. We'd rather advise once extra than have you come home with a lock that doesn't fit.
What does SCM certification mean on an outboard motor lock?
SCM stands for Sold Secure and Stichting Certificering Mechanische beveiliging. Locks carrying this mark have been independently tested for resistance to sawing, filing and crowbars. An SCM-certified lock takes a trained thief longer to defeat, which is usually enough of a deterrent. Some insurers require an SCM lock as a condition for theft cover on an outboard motor. Always check this with your insurer before buying.
How do I fit an outboard motor lock correctly?
Mount the motor in the running position on the transom. Slide the lock around the transom and mounting clamp, making sure it contacts all surfaces. Turn the key and check that the motor can no longer rotate or be pushed upward. Use the lock whenever the motor is on a trailer too: a motor sitting loose on a trailer can be taken without anyone noticing.
