Musto HPX Pro Ocean sailing gear for ocean racing
Musto HPX is Musto's top-class ocean racing line, developed for the harshest conditions at sea. The Pro Ocean models are built from 3-layer Gore-Tex Pro with reinforced wear zones, fluorescent rescue details and fully sealed YKK AquaSeal zippers. HPX is worn by race sailors in events such as the Vendée Globe, Ocean Globe Race and transatlantic regattas such as the ARC. Our HPX collection consists of a sailing jacket, salopette, spray top, sailing gloves and a complete sailing set, all in the Pro Ocean version and exclusively for men. The HPX line is part of our wider Musto sailing gear collection, which also includes BR1, BR2 and MPX.
Where does HPX fit in the Musto range?
Musto positions HPX as the top class above MPX, with heavier fabric, more reinforcements and specifically developed for the most extreme ocean conditions. The table below puts HPX next to MPX and BR2 so you can see where the three offshore lines build on each other.
| Line | Material | Sailing area | Typical use |
|---|---|---|---|
| BR2 | 2-layer BR2 fabric | Coastal to offshore | Multi-day trips |
| MPX | 3-layer Gore-Tex Pro | Offshore and racing | Long passages, racing |
| HPX Pro Ocean | 3-layer Gore-Tex Pro with extra reinforcements | Ocean racing and extreme conditions | Solo round-the-world, transatlantic |
HPX is the heaviest and most expensive line from Musto. For recreational race sailors and weekend offshore sailors, MPX is often enough. Want to look at the top end and compare other premium brands alongside Musto? Check our sailing gear category.
Materials, seams and features
The HPX Pro Ocean jacket has a raised fleece-lined collar, a three-way adjustable hood with removable peak, fluorescent rescue details on hood and shoulders, and fully sealed YKK AquaSeal zippers. The HPX salopette comes with adjustable braces, a high back panel, reinforced seat and knee patches and deep cargo pockets with waterproof closure. The spray top (also called a smock in sailor jargon) is a pull-over without front zip, ideal for race sailing where you want a minimum of water ingress. The HPX sailing gloves are waterproof and grip-reinforced for line work. If you only need a sailing jacket, check our sailing jacket category with models from Musto and other brands.
Frequently asked questions about Musto HPX
What is the difference between Musto HPX and MPX?
HPX and MPX both use 3-layer Gore-Tex Pro, but HPX has a heavier construction with extra reinforcements at wear points and adapted construction for ocean racing under the harshest conditions. MPX is the offshore racing standard for long passages and regattas, HPX is intended for solo round-the-world races, transatlantic events and ARC participants who spend months at sea continuously. The jacket fits roomier for layers underneath, has a more comprehensive hood closure and is equipped with fluorescent rescue details. HPX is therefore the logical choice for racing teams and serious ocean racers; for most offshore sailors MPX is enough.
What is a Musto HPX spray top (smock)?
A spray top, also called a smock in sailor jargon, is a pull-over sailing jacket without front zip. Instead, you pull it on over your head, and it closes at the neck and waist with elastic cuffs and velcro flaps. The advantage: minimal openings where water can enter, ideal for race sailing in spray or waves. The Musto HPX spray top is made of 3-layer Gore-Tex Pro with the same technical features as the jacket. It is slightly lighter and cut sportier, and is often worn by race sailors on trapeze dinghies or in active line work positions on deck.
What is included in a Musto HPX sailing set?
A Musto HPX sailing set consists of the HPX Pro Ocean jacket and matching HPX salopette in the same red colour scheme. The set is fit-matched and costs less than buying both items separately. HPX is currently stocked exclusively in red, because fluorescent red offers maximum visibility in man-overboard situations on open water. Ordering separate sizes for jacket and trousers gives you a perfect fit. The spray top, sailing gloves and individual parts are also available separately for those who only need specific components.
Who is Musto HPX intended for?
HPX is developed for race sailors and professional ocean racers who spend months at sea or sail in extreme conditions. Think of competitors in the Vendée Globe, Ocean Globe Race, Fastnet Race and serious ARC routes. The high price reflects the material, the reinforcements, the construction and the lifespan under heavy load. For recreational weekend sailors, coastal sailors and offshore sailors who occasionally make a longer passage, BR2 or MPX is almost always the more logical choice. Buying HPX is an investment that pays off mainly with intensive, multi-year offshore use.
