Buy Windsurf Boom
The windsurf boom – also called a wishbone – is the U-shaped tube that clips onto the mast and allows you to control the sail. It comes in two main materials: carbon and aluminium. Carbon is lighter and stiffer; aluminium is more robust and affordable. The standard diameter is 26–29 mm, and the adjustable length covers sails from 3.0 to 9.5 m².
| Style | Material | Diameter |
|---|---|---|
| Beginner / Allround | Aluminium | 28–29 mm |
| Freeride advanced | Carbon 30–50 % | 26–29 mm |
| Wave | Carbon 75–100 % | 26 mm |
| Race | Carbon 80–100 % | 26–28 mm |
| Youth | Aluminium / Carbon | 26 mm |
Carbon is lighter, stiffer and transmits fewer vibrations – a noticeable advantage during long sessions. Aluminium is more durable and budget-friendly, making it the ideal starting point. Find more equipment at Windsurf Mast, Windsurf Sails and Windsurfing.
Choosing the right boom length
The correct length is listed on the sail’s specification card under ‘Boom Length’. Set the boom so that the back end lightly touches the clew corner, with a little adjustment room in both directions. The adjustable range is typically 130–180 cm; choose a boom where your sail size sits in the middle of the adjustment range.
Frequently asked questions
- Carbon or aluminium – which is better?
- Carbon is lighter, stiffer and transmits fewer vibrations, which is clearly noticeable during long sessions. Aluminium is cheaper and more robust against knocks and crashes – ideal for beginners or as a training boom.
- How do I choose the right boom length?
- Check your sail’s specification card under ‘Boom Length’. Ideally your sail size should sit in the middle of the adjustment range (approx. 40–50 cm of travel).
- Which diameter do I need?
- 26 mm is standard for wave and race, and for riders with smaller hands. 28–29 mm offers more grip for beginners and freeriders.
- How do I maintain my windsurf boom?
- Rinse with fresh water after every salt-water session. Lubricate the inner tube regularly with silicone spray so it slides easily. Protect carbon booms from prolonged direct UV exposure when not in use.
