Which Starboard is suitable for beginners?
The Starboard GO series is the direct beginner choice. The wide deck with large volume options gives stability during waterstart and first planing attempts. The GO Windsurfer comes with a daggerboard case and removable daggerboard, useful for first lessons when you cannot yet steer through the wind. After roughly twenty sailing hours with basic technique and planing experience, you can move up to the Carve for more speed and response. A GO 152 or 185 suits most starting riders up to around 90 kg.
What is the difference between Carve and Futura?
Both boards are freeride-oriented but with different emphasis. The Carve focuses on turning and manoeuvrability, with a rocker and outline that make the board more responsive on gybes and tight turns. The Futura focuses on straight-line speed and longer distances, with a flatter rocker for early planing and a more race-oriented shape. For mixed water with many gybe sessions choose Carve, for long tours and cross-water crossings choose Futura.
Do I need a separate fin?
All Starboard boards come with a matching standard fin, but for specific riding styles or wind ranges an upgrade pays off. The Drake Slalom Tuttlebox or US Box gives more lift and higher top speed in slalom conditions. The Drake Shallow Freeride is a shallow-water variant that catches less mud, sand or weed. The Drake Freeride G10 Powerbox is a general upgrade for Carve and Futura. For wave riding, use a dedicated wave fin from the Kobe bundle or a separate twin/quad set.
What do the numbers after the model name mean?
The number is the board volume in litres. Volume determines buoyancy, which is decisive for your waterstart and your minimum-wind threshold. Rule of thumb: choose a board volume equal to your body weight in kg plus thirty to sixty litres, depending on wind and skill level. A 75 kg rider in average wind and at intermediate level fits a Carve 119 or Futura 125. In lighter wind or at beginner level, move up to Carve 144 or GO 152.
