Buy a sailing bag: boardbag and drybag for sailing

A sailing bag is a sturdy, weather-resistant bag designed to keep sailing clothing, equipment and accessories dry and protected on the way to and on the water. Whether you're a day sailor on a lake or heading offshore on the North Sea, a good sailing bag is just as essential as a good sail. The range includes boardbags, drybags, duffel bags and specialised bags for helmets and clothing from brands like EvoNautic, Helly Hansen and Musto.

Which sailing bag suits your sailing style?

Not every sailing bag is the same. A boardbag protects your fins and mast during transport; a drybag keeps your clothing waterproof during a capsize; a duffel bag from Helly Hansen or Musto fits in the hold of a keelboat. The table below helps you make the right choice quickly.

Type Contents Water resistance Use
Boardbag Surfboard, windsurf board, fin, mast Spray-proof, protective foam Transport to spot or regatta
Drybag Clothing, phone, first aid, keys Waterproof (roll-top closure, IPX6+) Dinghy, offshore, kayak
Clothing sailing bag / duffel Complete kit, sailing suit, boots Spray-proof, reinforced base Keelboat, club, airport
Helmet bag Sailing helmet, sunglasses, gloves Light spray-proof Dinghy, catamaran, RS class

Rule of thumb: use drybags for anything that absolutely must stay dry. Choose a duffel bag for your whole weekend kit and a boardbag when transporting gear by car or plane.

EvoNautic, Helly Hansen and Musto sailing bags

EvoNautic offers drybags from 5 to 20 litres and waterproof barrels from 3.6 to 15 litres for the smallest valuables. Helly Hansen Scout Duffels (30 to 90 litres) are a popular choice for keelboat sailors who want their clothing to stay dry even if they go for an unexpected swim. The Musto Duffel (30 to 65 litres) features YKK zips and a reinforced shoulder strap for longer trips. Want to protect your sailing clothing too? Pair a duffel bag with a separate waterproof bag for your most sensitive gear.

Frequently asked questions about sailing bags

What's the difference between a boardbag and a sailing bag?

A boardbag is primarily designed to transport and protect a surfboard or windsurf board from impacts, UV and scratches. The interior is lined with foam or fleece and the bag has a full-length zip. A sailing bag is a broader category: it can be a boardbag, but also a drybag, duffel bag or helmet bag. Most sailors use the term sailing bag to mean a duffel bag or backpack for clothing and accessories. Boardbags are larger, stiffer and specifically for transporting equipment; sailing bags are more flexible and suited for everyday use on the pontoon.

Which sailing bag do I need for offshore sailing?

For offshore sailing you need a waterproof duffel bag that can handle waves and spray, a compact roll-top drybag for your documents and valuables, and possibly a separate helmet bag. A Helly Hansen Duffel 50-70 litre or Musto Duffel 65 litre works well: these fit in the holds of most keelboat series. Always bring a drybag of at least 10 litres for your phone, VHF radio and first aid supplies. Check that the bag has a reinforced base so it won't wear through on rough grating decks even after years of sailing.

How do I pack my sailing clothes correctly for a regatta?

Roll sailing clothing instead of folding to prevent creases and kinks, especially with multi-layer laminate jackets. Always put wet clothing in a separate drybag or plastic bag so the dry items stay dry. Pack the heaviest and stiffest items at the bottom of the duffel, boots to the side, and make sure the clothing you need first is on top. Use small drybags (5-10 litres) for socks, gloves and balaclava. For long-distance regattas: always check whether the duffel meets the airline's baggage requirements for dimensions and weight.

How do I clean a wet sailing bag?

Rinse the sailing bag with clean fresh water after every sailing day, especially if you've been in salt water. Salt gradually destroys plastic and fabric coatings. Turn the bag inside out if possible and let it dry completely in the air, not in the sun on a hot car bonnet. Remove sand and seaweed from zips with a soft brush and occasionally lubricate zips with a dry silicone spray. Stubborn stains can be removed with lukewarm water and a little soap, but never put a bag with reinforced PE walls or foam in a washing machine or dryer.
