Engine maintenance — extend the life of your outboard motor
Regular maintenance is the best insurance against failure on the water. With the right oil, the correct additive and a clean engine, your outboard motor will stay reliable for years and retain its value.
| Product | Application |
|---|---|
| 2-stroke oil | Mixed into the fuel; lubricates moving parts inside the combustion chamber |
| 4-stroke oil | Fills the separate oil circuit; keeps the engine and gearbox lubricated |
| Gearbox oil (lower unit oil) | Lubricates the underwater gearbox; change annually or when the oil appears cloudy |
| Engine cleaner | Removes oil, fuel and dirt from the outboard motor |
| Fuel stabiliser | Prevents gum formation and corrosion from ethanol fuel during storage |
Which engine oil do I need?
2-stroke engine: The oil is mixed directly into the fuel (typically 1:50 or as specified by the manufacturer). Use only a dedicated marine 2-stroke oil — not car engine oil.
4-stroke engine: The oil sits in a separate reservoir and must be checked and changed regularly. Follow the recommended viscosity grade (e.g. 10W-40 Marine) and use a marine-certified oil.
Lower unit oil: The gearbox oil in the underwater section of the motor must be changed annually or when the oil turns milky or cloudy — a sign of water ingress through a worn seal.
