The volume choice in Carve and Futura (number in litres) determines your buoyancy: rule of thumb is body weight in kg plus thirty to sixty litres for average wind. Wood Sandwich construction gives a slightly stiffer feel, Starlite Carbon is significantly lighter for early planing. Frequently asked questions about Starboard windsurf
Which Starboard windsurf board is suitable for beginners?
The GO series is the direct beginner choice. The GO Windsurfer (with daggerboard case and daggerboard) is ideal for first lessons when you can't yet steer through the wind and can lean on the daggerboard. The GO SL and GO EVA are lighter and have an EVA deck that's warmer and softer in falls. The GO Starlite is the premium entry with lighter construction and better performance as you progress to planing windsurfing.
What do the volume numbers behind Carve and Futura mean?
The number is the board volume in litres. Volume determines buoyancy and therefore your waterstart capability and minimum-wind threshold. Rule of thumb: choose volume equal to body weight in kg plus thirty to sixty litres. A 75 kg rider in average wind fits a Carve 119 or Futura 125. In lighter wind or at beginner-planing level, move up to Carve 144 or GO 152.
Which Drake fin should I put on my Starboard?
All Starboard boards come with a matching standard fin, but Drake fins are the recommended upgrade for specific riding styles. The Drake Slalom Tuttlebox or US Box gives more lift and top speed in slalom. The Drake Shallow Freeride 220 (US Box) and the Drake Shallow Tuttlebox are shallow-water fins. The Drake Freeride G10 Powerbox is a general upgrade for Carve and Futura.
What's the difference between Wood Sandwich and Starlite Carbon?
Wood Sandwich is a construction with wood core and fibreglass laminate giving a lively and slightly stiffer ride, with good durability and average weight. Starlite Carbon uses carbon reinforcements in the top layer for a significantly lighter board with faster acceleration and higher top speed, at higher price. For recreational freeride Wood Sandwich is enough. For competitive riders Starlite Carbon is the direct upgrade.
