Boat cleaning cloths: microfibre for every surface

A good cleaning session starts with the right cloths and sponges. Microfibre has become the standard for cleaning boats: the tiny fibres capture dirt, dust and salt residue without scratching the surface, and they absorb considerably more water than ordinary cotton cloths. Whether you want to dry the hull after sailing, wipe down the console or polish the gelcoat after a cleaning session: the right microfibre cloth does the job better and faster. At Watersportsonline you will find a complete range of microfibre cleaning products for the boat: from soft sponges and wash mitts to large drying towels and foam hand pads.

Microfibre vs. ordinary cloths

Ordinary cotton cloths absorb less water and can cause scratches in gelcoat or varnish when contaminated with salt or grit. Microfibre works electrostatically to trap and hold dirt rather than spreading it across the surface. The material dries quickly and is less prone to mould formation. Microfibre cloths are reusable: after machine washing (without fabric softener) they are just as effective as new. Fabric softener coats the fibres and reduces their absorption. Which product for which task?

For washing the hull use a large sponge or wash mitt with boat soap. For drying after rinsing, a large drying towel is ideal: lay it on the wet surface and press gently rather than rubbing. For applying polish or wax, foam hand pads are the best choice: they absorb the product evenly and apply it in an even layer without streaks.

Frequently asked questions about boat cleaning cloths

How do I wash microfibre cleaning products?

Machine wash at 40°C without fabric softener. Fabric softener coats the fibres and significantly reduces their absorption and cleaning power. Do not wash microfibre together with fluffy materials such as towels or fleece. Store dry and out of direct sunlight to prevent discolouration.

Can I use microfibre cloths on a painted surface?

Yes, as long as the cloths are clean. Never use a microfibre cloth that has previously been in contact with abrasives. Use separate cloths for washing and for drying or polishing.

How many cloths do I need for a boat cleaning session?

At least three: a wash mitt or sponge for cleaning, a large drying towel for drying, and a smaller cloth or foam pad for polishing or waxing.

Are microfibre sponges also suitable for cleaning the engine?

No, for grease and oil use specific cleaning sponges resistant to solvents. Never use the same sponge for the engine and the paintwork: grease and oil residues can damage lacquered surfaces.
