In 1877, Captain Helly Juell Hansen recognized the need for better protection against the harsh Norwegian elements. He and his wife, Maren Margarethe, began soaking coarse linen with linseed oil. This advanced process resulted in water-resistant clothing for workers at sea, and Helly Hansen was born.

Working from their basement, the innovative and hardworking duo tirelessly created workwear designed for long days at sea. The Norwegian manufacturer quickly became an important player in the clothing industry. Just one year after its founding, Helly Hansen received the first of many awards at the World's Fair in Paris.

The rest is a true Norwegian industrial adventure. In a short time, Helly Hansen increased production, built and acquired factories throughout the country, and expanded its product range. Helly Hansen has produced everything from agricultural and industrial products to cork life jackets, gas masks, and carpets.
