Buy SUP clothing for stand-up paddleboarding
SUP clothing is technical watersport apparel designed specifically for stand-up paddleboarding: lightweight, quick-dry and UV-protective so you stay comfortable standing on the board, paddling and taking the occasional swim. The range runs from UV shirts and rashguards through boardshorts and lycra leggings to caps and neoprene tops. Brands like JOBE, Helly Hansen, Prolimit and Brunotti each have their own focus: JOBE on entry-level neoprene, Prolimit on technical convertible tops, Helly Hansen on waterproof rashguards.
Which SUP clothing suits your situation?
| Type | UV rating | Dry time | Use for SUP |
|---|---|---|---|
| UV shirt (long sleeve) | UPF 40-50+ | 15-30 min | Summer day trips, recreational SUP |
| Rashguard | UPF 50+ | 15-20 min | Intense paddling, SUP yoga, racing |
| Lycra legging | UPF 30-50+ | 20-35 min | Women's SUP, SUP yoga, UV leg cover |
| Boardshort | UPF 20-30 | 20-40 min | Warm summer days, casual beach SUP |
| Cap / hat | Face UV | n/a | Face and neck protection in full sun |
As a rule of thumb: choose a long sleeve UV shirt over a sleeveless rashguard whenever you are on the water for more than 90 minutes straight. Your arms are most exposed to sun damage during every paddle stroke.
Material and functionality
The best SUP clothing combines freedom of movement with quick-dry properties. When paddleboarding you are in constant motion: your core rotates with every stroke, your knees bend and when you fall you end up fully in the water. Prolimit makes the SUP Top Convertible with a detachable sleeve construction. JOBE uses recycled neoprene materials in the Long John wetsuit line, suitable for water temperatures from 15°C. Also check for flat or internal seams in SUP clothing. Rough seams irritate the sides and armpits during long paddles. Most Helly Hansen and JOBE models in this range feature flatlock construction.
Frequently asked questions about SUP clothing
What is the best clothing for stand-up paddleboarding?
The ideal SUP base is a long sleeve UV shirt with UPF 40+ paired with a boardshort or lycra legging. The UV shirt protects your arms which come up to sun level with every paddle stroke. A boardshort or legging gives you freedom of movement without riding up. Add a cap or hat for face protection. When water temperatures drop below 18°C, a neoprene long john or convertible neoprene top is a smart call. JOBE and Helly Hansen both offer complete SUP outfits that dry quickly after an unexpected swim.
Do I need a wetsuit for SUP?
It depends on the water temperature. Above 22°C a UV shirt and boardshort will do just fine. Between 18°C and 22°C a shorty or neoprene top provides extra protection when you fall in. Below 18°C a 2mm long john or fullsuit is strongly recommended because every fall means full immersion. In open water or with an onshore wind, it always feels a category colder than it looks.
How much UV protection do I need for SUP?
On the water UV exposure is 25-50% higher than on land due to reflection off the surface. Choose clothing with at least UPF 30, ideally UPF 50+. Long sleeve shirts and leggings from Prolimit and Helly Hansen reach UPF 50+ as standard. The longer you are out, the more coverage pays off. Combine UV clothing with water-resistant sunscreen on your face, neck and hands.
What do I wear for SUP in winter?
In winter or at water temperatures below 12°C, a fullsuit of at least 3/2mm is your base layer. Over that, a long sleeve lycra adds warmth and comfort. JOBE offers entry-level long johns in 2mm that work well for northern European winter waters. Add neoprene gloves and SUP socks: hands and feet cool down first in cold water. With this layering system you can comfortably SUP in October and March too.
