The fleece fabric is soft 100-gram polar fleece with breathable properties. The material is light and quick-drying, making it ideal as a mid layer between a baselayer and a sailing jacket or softshell. A fleece vest with half zip glides more easily under a Helly Hansen sailing jacket and gives smoothly at the helm. A full zip gives easier temperature regulation over a long day on the water. Frequently asked questions about Helly Hansen Daybreaker

What is the difference between Daybreaker full zip and half zip?

The full zip goes from bottom to top open and is therefore the most flexible version for temperature regulation. During a warm afternoon you unzip, at cool sundown you zip up. The half zip only goes to the breastbone and is pulled over the head. The advantage of the half zip is that there's less fabric and zip bulk where a sailing jacket or softshell goes over it, and it's slightly warmer because there's no full zip seam letting out heat. For sailors who wear the Daybreaker primarily as mid layer, the half zip is often more practical.

Is the Daybreaker suitable for sailing on large lakes?

Yes, the Daybreaker is a popular mid layer for inland sailing on large lakes and other cooler waters. The fleece material insulates even in damp conditions and dries faster than cotton or wool. For sailing wear the Daybreaker as middle layer between a quick-drying baselayer (for example Lifa Active) and a waterproof sailing jacket. For pure winter conditions or longer offshore tours the Daybreaker is a good start, combine it with an extra primaloft or softshell layer on top.

Do Daybreaker fleeces shrink in the wash?

When washing at 30 degrees in a normal programme, Daybreaker fleeces don't shrink or barely. Wash on a delicate programme with a mild detergent without fabric softener, because softener closes the fibres and reduces the breathability of the fleece. Tumble drying on low or no heat is possible, but air drying on a hanger is better for the lifespan. Avoid direct contact with a hot radiator or iron; polyester fleece melts at high temperatures.

Which Daybreaker is suitable for children?

For children there are fleece vests in light blue and ice blue, and the Daybreaker 2.0 in dusty pink with reinforced parts on wear-prone zones. The Daybreaker kids fleece trousers come in black and dark blue. The kids Daybreaker follows the same sizing as other Helly Hansen junior clothing, with sizes from around 86-92 (1-2 years) to 152-164 (12-14 years). A Daybreaker fleece vest is a good starter mid layer for junior sailors in clubs.
