Buy a Kids Buoyancy Aid, swimming aid not an automatic lifejacket
A children's buoyancy aid is a swimming aid. It does not automatically turn an unconscious child face-up. That is the key difference from a lifejacket. Buoyancy aids are available in nylon and neoprene.
| Type | Collar | Turns child | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Buoyancy aid | No collar | Face-down | Swimmers with certificate, sheltered water |
| Lifejacket | Collar present | Face-up | Non-swimmers, open water, on board |

Nylon vs neoprene
Nylon is affordable, lightweight and easy to care for, ideal for occasional use. Neoprene is soft, flexible and comfortable for all-day wear.
Frequently asked questions
How do I choose the right size?
Size is based on your child's body weight. Check the size chart for the specific brand. The vest should fit snugly around the torso while allowing full shoulder movement. Never buy too large, because the vest can slip over the head.
What is the difference between a buoyancy aid and a lifejacket?
A buoyancy aid is suitable for children with a swimming certificate in sheltered water. A lifejacket is for non-swimmers, open water or on board and automatically turns the child face-up.
From what age can my child wear a buoyancy aid?
There is no official minimum age. Buoyancy aids are available from 15 kg. Toddlers without a swimming certificate should always wear a lifejacket. For babies there are specialist baby swim vests with head support.
How do I care for a children's buoyancy aid?
Rinse with fresh water after each use and dry in the shade. Do not store folded while damp. Check buckles, seams and foam annually. Replace if the foam has compressed.
