A SUP board (Stand-Up Paddle board) is a floating plank you stand on while propelling yourself with a long paddle, available in inflatable form (iSUP) for compact transport or in hard form for maximum performance. The range includes boards from Aquatone, JOBE, Aztron and Brunotti, from compact 8'6 wave boards to 14' race boards and a 13' multi-person board for the family. Rule of thumb when choosing: for your first experience choose an all-round 10' board around €300-€400 with a wide deck (30-34 inches) for stability. If you want to SUP further on holiday or larger lakes, choose a touring board of 11' to 12'. Race boards under 27 inches are only suitable for advanced paddlers because of limited stability.
Inflatable or hardboard
By far the most SUP boards in the range are iSUP models (inflatable): they use dropstitch construction with double PVC layers, reach 12 to 18 PSI working pressure and are barely distinguishable from a hardboard on the water. For transport and storage iSUPs are practical: rolled up they fit in a backpack and in any car trunk. A hardboard (epoxy or carbon-skin) gives more response and is faster on the water, but requires a roof rack and 3 meters of storage. For 95% of recreational paddlers an iSUP is the smart choice.

What is the difference between an inflatable SUP (iSUP) and a hardboard?
An inflatable SUP board uses dropstitch technology where thousands of polyester threads connect the top and bottom layers, making it feel as stiff as a hardboard when inflated to 15 PSI. Advantages: compact transport (backpack size), easy storage, robust on contact with stones or docks. Disadvantage: slightly longer setup time due to pumping (8 to 15 minutes). Hardboards (epoxy or carbon-skin) are faster on the water through more direct response and higher torsional stiffness, but are more vulnerable to impacts and require a roof rack for transport. For 95% of recreational paddlers an iSUP is the smart choice; race paddlers and ambitious wave paddlers more often choose hardboard.
Which size SUP board fits my level and weight?
The size of a SUP board depends on your weight, experience level and intended use. Rule of thumb for all-round paddling: body weight in kilograms plus 100 liters determines the minimum board volume. A 75 kg paddler thus chooses at least 175 liters, which corresponds to a 10'6 board of 32 inches wide. For beginners more volume is always better because it gives more stability during the first sessions. Advanced paddlers choose narrower boards (28-30 inches) for more speed. For competition use other rules apply: race boards are narrow (24-27 inches) and long (12'6 or 14') for maximum straight-line speed at the cost of stability.
What is included in a SUP package?
Most iSUP boards in the range are sold as a "package", including: the board itself, a manual double action SUP pump with pressure gauge, an adjustable paddle (often aluminum or fiberglass), an 8 to 10 foot leash, a removable fin, and a backpack for storage and transport. Premium packages add a better paddle (carbon content), a larger bag or a waterproof phone case. A separate electric SUP pump and a lighter carbon paddle are upgrades available separately for those who want to enhance the package.
How do you maintain a SUP board?
Rinse the board with fresh water after each use in salt water, especially the valve and fin slot. Let the board dry before rolling it up to prevent mold. Do not store the folded iSUP under pressure for long periods, that creates permanent creases in the PVC. Preferably store it half-inflated or folded without other heavy items on top. Check the valve seal annually with some soapy water: bubbles indicate a leak that is easily tightened with a Halkey-Roberts wrench. For hardboards: store out of direct sunlight to prevent yellowing, and periodically check for hairline cracks in the coating.
