Buy inflatable island for on the water
An inflatable island is a large floating platform made from PVC or dropstitch material that gives multiple people space to lie, sit or play on the water at the same time. It differs from a funtube in that it is not towed by a boat, but anchored as a standalone floating object or drifts freely on a lake, beach lake or bay. Brands like JOBE and Aquatone build models ranging from compact islands for two people to large platforms that carry a whole group of friends.
Which inflatable island suits your situation?
Choose based on group size, intended use and whether you want to attach it to a boat.
| Type | Size (approx.) | Max. people | Use | Boat attachment |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2-person island | approx. 240 x 140 cm | 2 | Beach lake, swimming | No / optional |
| 4-person island | approx. 300 x 200 cm | 4 | Lake, bay, holiday | Yes (D-ring) |
| Lounge island | approx. 350 x 250 cm | 4-6 | Relaxing, sunbathing | Yes (D-ring) |
| Platform / water podium | approx. 400 x 300 cm | 6-8 | Boat base, jumping | Yes (multiple D-rings) |
| Multi / family | approx. 500+ cm length | 8-10 | Group outings, boat holidays | Yes (integrated line) |
When buying, look at the maximum load capacity in kilograms, not just the number of people. Large JOBE platforms have D-rings at the corners that you attach directly to a mooring line or deck cleat. Aquatone islands are popular for their dropstitch construction: stiffer with less flex under load.
What's the difference with a funtube?
A funtube is actively towed by a motorboat with people on it. An inflatable island floats passively: you lie on it while the island stays still or drifts gently. Anyone looking for active water fun will find funtube models in the JOBE funtube collection. For active movement on the water, check out SUP boards.
Frequently asked questions about inflatable islands
What is the difference between an inflatable island and a funtube?
An inflatable island is a stationary floating platform designed for lying down and relaxing. A funtube is an inflatable object attached behind a motorboat and towed at speed for active fun. The construction reflects this: funtubes are more compact, more robust and designed to withstand the forces of towing; islands are wide and flat to provide as much lying space as possible. An island can also be detached and left to drift freely; a funtube only makes sense when a boat is present. For families with young children who want to play calmly on the water, an island is the more obvious choice.
How do you inflate an inflatable island?
Large islands like the JOBE Infinity series and the Aquatone Manta have a substantial air volume and aren't practical to inflate without a pump. Use an electric pump with a pressure setting of 0.5 to 1 PSI for most PVC islands; dropstitch platforms can handle higher pressure, up to around 1.5 to 2 PSI. Check the sticker on the island for the exact maximum pressure. Close the valve firmly after inflating. Inflating a large platform with an electric pump typically takes 5 to 10 minutes. Don't leave the island in direct sunlight before getting on it: heat expands air and can push pressure above the recommended level.
Can an inflatable island be attached to a boat?
Yes, most islands from JOBE and Aquatone have D-rings or integrated loop points on the sides or corners that you use to attach a line to a boat or jetty. This stops the island drifting off in wind or current. Use a line long enough to absorb movement but short enough to prevent the island banging against the hull. Never attach directly to a fast motorboat without someone sitting on the island; the forces at high speed will damage the attachment points. For longer anchoring, use an anchor line at the underside of the island if that attachment point is available.
How do you store an inflatable island?
Deflate the island completely before storage. First rinse it with lukewarm fresh water to remove salt, sand and chlorine; these substances break down PVC material over time. Dry the island thoroughly before rolling it up, as a damp island in a closed bag is the ideal environment for mould and odour. Roll the island loosely from the wide side towards the valves. Store it in the included carry bag in a cool, dry place out of direct sunlight. Heat and UV radiation accelerate the ageing of PVC. Check the valves annually for sealing; a small amount of silicone spray on the valve rubbers keeps them supple and leak-free.
