Musto sailing gloves: which do I choose?

| Essential Sailing SF / LF 2.0 | Updated entry | Newer cut, better fit around wrist |
| Performance SF / LF | Premium | Intermediate sailing, regatta, daily use |
| Performance SF / LF 2.0 | Premium updated | Better grip on modern dyneema lines |
| Performance 2.0 Winter | Winter | Spring and autumn, cold hand protection |

The choice between Essential Sailing and Performance is primarily about grip material and durability. Essential has an Amara synthetic palm that offers good grip and is affordable. Performance has improved grip leather with reinforced wear zones on thumb and index finger, more suited to competitive sailors and crew who pull on dyneema and stay lines multiple times per week. Frequently asked questions about Musto sailing gloves
What is the difference between Short Finger and Long Finger?
SF stands for Short Finger and means the fingertips of thumb, index finger and middle finger remain free. This is practical for tying sheets, operating smartphones on board or feeling fine dyneema rope. LF stands for Long Finger and means all fingertips are covered, giving extra protection against cold, chafing and sun. For warmer months and competitive sailing with lots of knot work, many sailors choose SF. For cold conditions, offshore work and longer trips, LF is the logical choice. Many sailors have both versions in their bag.
What size sailing gloves do I need?
Musto sailing gloves are sized on hand circumference in centimetres, measured just under the knuckles and without the thumb. Take a measuring tape and wrap it around your dominant hand: that's your size. When in doubt between two sizes choose the smaller, because leather and synthetic leather stretch in use by half a size. A glove that's too large gives less grip and pinches when closing the wrist velcro. A glove that's too small pinches the knuckles and restricts circulation in cold trips.
Which Musto glove for winter trips?
For cold winter sailing sessions the Performance 2.0 Winter is the first choice. It has a thicker insulation layer, a water-repellent coating and an extended cuff that clamps over the sailing jacket sleeve to keep water out. For extreme cold weather below 5 degrees or longer offshore trips the HPX Gore-Tex Ocean is the step up: fully waterproof with Gore-Tex membrane and thermal lining. The Evo Waterproof is a lighter alternative for changing wet conditions without full winter insulation.
How do I care for leather sailing gloves?
Rinse off salt with fresh water after every session on salt water. Squeeze lightly and hang on a hanger or lay flat in the shade to dry, not in direct sun or near a heater. Direct dry heat hardens the leather and causes cracking. Treat the leather parts a few times per season with a neutral leather balm such as Nikwax Leather Restorer to keep the suppleness. Store the gloves dry in a breathable bag or an open compartment of your bag.
