Musto sailing trousers for every sailing profile
Musto sailing trousers are waterproof sailing pants or salopettes from the British brand Musto, available in waterproof versions for offshore sailing, performance trousers for inshore racing and shorter models for warmer days on board. We stock Musto trousers for men, women and children across all main lines, from the coastal BR1 Channel to the Pro Ocean HPX, plus the Evolution Performance Stretch trousers without waterproofing for sporty sailing in dry conditions. For the complete brand overview including jackets, sailing sets and accessories see our Musto sailing gear collection.
Salopette, trousers or shorts: what suits you?
Musto divides its sailing trousers into three main shapes. The salopette is a waterproof trouser with adjustable braces and a high back panel, intended for offshore use in spray and rain. The performance trouser has a regular waistband without braces, with stretch fabric for inshore racing and cruising in dry weather. The sailing shorts are a summer variant for warm days on board or in the harbour.
| Type | Closure | Sailing area | Typical use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Salopette | Adjustable braces, high back panel | Offshore and coastal in bad weather | Spray, rain, long passages |
| Performance trousers | Waistband without braces | Inshore racing and cruising | Dry conditions, sporty sailing |
| Sailing shorts | Waistband with elastic | Coastal and summer | Warm weather, mooring, regular route |
For sailors who go out in both bad and good weather, a combination of a waterproof salopette and an Evolution Performance trouser is a common choice. Also check our general sailing gear category with Helly Hansen, Mystic and Prolimit. For a direct overview of sailing trousers from all brands see our general sailing trousers category.

Frequently asked questions about Musto sailing trousers
What is a salopette and when do you choose one?
A salopette is a waterproof sailing trouser with adjustable braces and a high back panel reaching mid-back. The high back panel prevents spray or seawater from entering through the bottom of your jacket, and the braces hold the trouser in place when you move a lot on deck. Salopettes are the standard at Musto for offshore trousers (BR1 Channel, BR2 Offshore 2.0, BR3 Pertex, MPX, HPX and LPX Gore-Tex), as they handle longer exposure to bad weather. For inshore racing and fair-weather sailing, a performance trouser without braces is more comfortable and lighter, but less weatherproof.
What is the Musto Evolution Performance Stretch trouser?
The Musto Evolution Performance Stretch trouser is a non-waterproof sailing trouser in stretch fabric, designed for inshore racing, regattas and cruising in dry conditions. The stretch provides optimal freedom of movement during race work on deck, and the material is quick-drying and breathable without a waterproof membrane. The Evolution line covers both long trousers and sailing shorts, in dark blue, black, light grey and platinum, for men and women. For sailors who mainly sail in good weather or as a backup trouser in the bag, Evolution Performance is a popular choice. For bad weather combine these with a waterproof Musto jacket.
What is a Musto Mid Layer Salopette?
The Musto Mid Layer Salopette is a thermal insulation trouser with braces worn beneath a waterproof salopette in cold conditions. It is not a standalone sailing trouser, but an intermediate layer that retains warmth without being waterproof itself. The Mid Layer Salopette uses synthetic insulation material comparable to fleece, with a smooth outer surface that allows you to easily pull a waterproof salopette over it. Ideal for autumn and winter sailing, early spring trips or night watches on offshore passages where temperatures drop. Combined with an MPX or HPX salopette it retains the warmth you generate during active work.
Does Musto offer sailing trousers for women and children?
Yes, Musto carries women's versions in most lines: BR1 Channel salopette women, BR2 Offshore 2.0 salopette women, BR3 Pertex Offshore women, MPX Offshore 2.0 women, plus Evolution Performance Stretch in long and short versions. The women's cut is sportier and shorter than the men's. For children we carry the Musto BR1 sailing trouser kids size in black, suitable for young sailors from around 8 years old. The HPX line is currently stocked for men only. Caught between sizing in women's and men's, or which size fits your child? Contact us for advice.
