Materials, seams and features
Every BR2 jacket has a high fleece-lined collar, an adjustable hood with peak and storm flaps over the zipper. Cuffs and hem are adjustable against cold and wind. The BR2 trousers come as a salopette with adjustable braces, a high back panel and reinforced seat and knee patches for those working on deck a lot. All models feature reflective elements and fleece-lined hand pockets. A full sailing set in BR2 combines jacket and salopette in one bundle, often cheaper than buying separately. What is the difference between Musto BR1 and BR2?
BR1 is Musto's coastal line for day trips and inland waters, BR2 is the offshore line for longer passages and heavier weather. The difference is in the fabric: BR2 uses a heavier 2-layer construction with higher waterproof rating and fully taped seams, while BR1 is lighter and more packable. BR2 sailing gear is therefore suited for anyone spending more than a few hours on the water at a time, or sailing regularly in heavier weather. For sailors mainly active on inland lakes or estuaries, BR1 often suffices. Racing sailors and offshore sailors choose the heavier MPX or HPX lines.
Is Musto BR2 suitable for offshore sailing?
Yes, BR2 is specifically designed for offshore use in moderate to heavy conditions. The 2-layer BR2 fabric blocks rain and spray, the taped seams prevent leakage under sustained wet conditions, and the storm flaps over zipper and collar keep wind out. For experienced offshore racers or ocean passages we recommend the Musto MPX or HPX with Gore-Tex Pro, since those are more breathable during intensive deck work. For weekend trips on the North Sea, the Wadden Sea and coastal sailing along Northern European shores, BR2 is an excellent choice that has proven itself over years among serious sailors.
What is included in a Musto BR2 sailing set?
A Musto BR2 sailing set consists of a BR2 Offshore jacket with hood and storm flaps, plus a matching BR2 salopette with braces and high back panel. The set is colour- and fit-matched, and costs less than buying both items separately. We stock BR2 sailing sets for both men and women in black, dark blue, red/black and yellow/black, with independent sizes for jacket and trousers since most sailors don't wear the same size in both. If you only need a pair of sailing trousers or want to buy the jacket separately, that's of course still possible.
How does Musto BR2 size up?
Musto BR2 generally runs roomy, as the clothing is meant to be worn over a midlayer or fleece. Men typically order their regular outerwear size, women can consider one size down for a more sporty fit.
