Funtube for behind the boat
A funtube is an inflatable tube you tow behind a motorboat, for relaxing or speeding across the water. For 1 to 10 people, in shapes from flat sofa-tubes to round rumble-tubes and bananas. At Watersportsonline we stock the complete JOBE range plus EvoNautic as a budget-friendly option, all in stock in Joure.
Which funtube for how many people?
| People | Suitable models | Minimum boat speed |
|---|---|---|
| 1 person | EvoNautic Funtube, JOBE Rumble, JOBE Droplet | 25 km/h |
| 2 people | JOBE Binar, Droplet, Airstream, Scout, Double Trouble | 30 km/h |
| 3 people | JOBE Binar 3, Airstream 3, Tribal 3, Banana Chaser 3 | 30 km/h |
| 4+ people | JOBE Binar 4, Banana Chaser 4, Sofa-models (Sonar, Swath) | 30 km/h |
For a relaxed ride, pick a flat sofa funtube like the Sea-Esta. Want action, then the Rumble or the Banana Chaser fit best. Pair with a good funtube rope and a bridle if your boat has no ski pole.
Package or individual funtube?
A funtube package includes the funtube itself plus a rope, a foot pump, a ski flag and a quick release. A quick release attaches between funtube and rope, with the neoprene wristband around your arm: in case of a fall, the funtube shoots free from the rope so you are not dragged along. For starters or anyone with no kit yet, the package is the smarter choice. If you only need a replacement, you can choose individually.
Frequently asked questions about funtubes
What do I need to use a funtube?
Besides the funtube itself, you need three things: a strong funtube rope with the right person-capacity, an inflation device (hand pump, foot pump or electric pump) and, if your boat has no ski pole, a bridle. A bridle attaches in a v-shape behind the motor so the rope does not catch in the propeller. For extra safety, a quick release system is recommended: it releases the funtube from the rope in a fall so you are not dragged along. Many people choose a funtube package which includes everything in one go.
How fast does my boat need to be?
For a one-person funtube, a boat that reaches at least 25 km/h is enough. For two people or more, we recommend at least 30 km/h, otherwise you do not get up out of the water and the funtube ploughs into the waves instead of skimming over them. The bigger the funtube and the more people, the more pull you need. A regular 4-stroke outboard motor with 25 hp on a 4-metre inflatable handles a 2-person funtube fine. For real action models like the Banana Chaser with 4 people, you are looking at 50 hp or more.
What is the difference between JOBE and EvoNautic funtubes?
JOBE is the premium brand in this segment, with a wide range from flat sofa-tubes to round action models and bananas for 1 to 10 people. JOBE funtubes feature reinforced seams, EVA grips and quality PVC. EvoNautic is our budget-friendly option: solid quality at a lower price, more limited range, mainly for 1 or 2 people. If you are on the water regularly and want lasting fun, JOBE is the recommendation. For starters or anyone looking for a backup, EvoNautic is more than enough.
How often does a funtube need to be inflated?
A funtube must be firmly inflated for good performance on the water, otherwise it folds instead of glides. Inflate fully until the PVC feels taut and has no pressable spots. During a long day on the water, a tube loses some pressure through temperature changes, especially in cold water followed by sun. Checking and topping up at each break is sensible. After use, deflate the tube and let it dry before storage, that way it lasts for years.
