Watersports helmet for protection on the water
A watersports helmet protects the head during falls on the water surface or contact with a board, ski, cable or other hard objects in or around the water. For kitesurfing, wakeboarding, water skiing, kayaking and similar disciplines, wearing a helmet is strongly recommended, and at many wake parks and kite schools it is also mandatory.
Watersports helmets are specifically developed for use in and around water. They are waterproof or water-resistant in construction, dry quickly after submersion and withstand the temperature changes and salt or chemically treated water found in various watersports environments. CE EN1385 is the European safety standard for certified watersports helmets. Always check for CE certification when purchasing.
| Helmet type | Features | Suitable for |
|---|---|---|
| Fixed helmet / hardshell | Maximum protection, solid outer shell | Wakeboarding, cable wakeboarding, kayaking in moving water |
| Adjustable helmet | Adjustable rear retention system, fits multiple head sizes | Children, shared use, families |
| Helmet with goggle attachment | Mounting bracket for goggles, waterproof visor | Kitesurfing with goggles, snowboard-style watersports |
| Light aerodynamic helmet | Lower weight, extra ventilation openings, open construction | Kitesurfing, SUP with active riding, long sessions |
When is a watersports helmet mandatory?
At most wake parks and cable parks, a helmet is mandatory for all visitors on the water, without exception. For kitesurfing, a helmet is not legally required but strongly recommended when jumping or falling at speed. For children: always a helmet, regardless of discipline. Combine with a buoyancy aid or impact vest.
Choosing a helmet: fit and CE certification
Measure head circumference in centimetres at the widest point just above the ears. The helmet should sit firmly without pinching and must not tilt forwards or backwards when moving your head. CE EN1385 is the minimum certification for a watersports helmet: tested for shock absorption, fit and durability with water contact.
Frequently asked questions about watersports helmets
- Which watersports helmet is suitable for kitesurfing?
- Choose a light helmet with good ventilation. A goggle attachment is handy in strong wind. CE EN1385 certification is the minimum. A helmet that is too heavy causes neck fatigue during long sessions.
- Is a watersports helmet mandatory for wakeboarding?
- Yes, mandatory at most wake parks. Also strongly recommended behind the boat. Check the specific rules at your local wake park.
- How do I choose the right size watersports helmet?
- Measure head circumference just above the ears in centimetres. Helmet should sit firmly without pinching and not tilt on head movement. Adjustable rear retention system allows precise fitting.
- Can I use a cycling or skateboard helmet for watersports?
- No. Cycling and skateboard helmets are not certified for use in water. Always choose a CE EN1385-certified watersports helmet.
