Boat steering system
A boat steering system connects the steering wheel to the outboard motor or rudder. It consists of at least a helm station, a steering cable and a connection to the motor's steering pin. Depending on engine power and boat type you choose a cable system or a hydraulic system.

Separate helm or complete set?
Cable steering sets come with or without a steering wheel. Already have a wheel? Choose the set without. Hydraulic systems are supplied as a complete set.

Can I install cable steering myself?
Yes, cable steering systems are designed for DIY installation. Mount the helm station, route the cable and connect to the motor's steering pin. Set the correct cable length so the wheel is straight when the motor is straight. Hydraulic systems are more complex due to oil filling and bleeding. If in doubt use a marine technician. When should I replace my steering cable?
Signs of replacement needed: noticeably more steering effort, sluggish or jerky motor response, visible kinks or corrosion in the cable, or the motor no longer centres when the wheel is straight. Inspect annually at bends. Preventive replacement after 5-7 years is sensible with regular use.
Does cable steering fit all outboard motors?
M58 standard fits outboards up to 55 hp with a standard steering pin (3/4 inch). Above 55 hp the M66 standard applies with a heavier cable. Check your motor specs if unsure. More in the boat accessories collection.
