WHAT IS KITESURFING?
Kitesurfing is a water sport in which a kitesurfer stands on a kitesurfing board and is pulled by a kite, also called a kite, attached to a trapeze. The power of the wind is used to sail across the water and perform spectacular jumps and maneuvers. It combines elements of surfing, windsurfing, wakeboarding and kite flying, making it a challenging but very spectacular water sport. Kitesurfing can be practiced in inland water as well as on the beach and in the sea.
WHY TAKE KITESURFING LESSONS?
Kitesurfing can involve dangers, which is why it is important to take a kitesurfing course to get out on the water safely. We always recommend taking kitesurfing lessons with certified instructors first. During your lessons you will learn how to use all the necessary materials safely. You will also learn about wind force, wind direction, onshore or offshore wind and the rules of the road.
HOW TO PROTECT YOURSELF WHILE KITESURFING
Kitesurfing can be dangerous in some situations, therefore always safety first. The water most of the year is often still too cold to go in without a wetsuit, therefore a good wetsuit is required to prevent hypothermia a wetsuit also helps against sunburn on the water. It is wise to wear a good water sports helmet while kitesurfing because you can take hard hits. If you plan to jump we always recommend wearing an impact vest, this is a thin life jacket that sits above your trapeze. An impact vest catches your blow when you hit the water, keeping your ribs protected.
One of the other more important safety systems the quick release. When you use the quick release, your bar detaches from your trapeze, leaving you with no power in your kite. You use the quick release only in dangerous situations on when you are no longer comfortable, for example when your lines get caught in the lines of another kitesurfer or when the wind suddenly increases very strongly. To make sure you always go on the water safely, always go with your friends to keep an eye on you, this is not only safe but also increases the fun while kitesurfing.
But the rule always remains: Safety First
WHAT DO YOU NEED TO GO KITESURFING?
Before you hit the water, you need to have the right kitesurfing equipment at your disposal. Which products you need depends on your personal preference and whether you are a beginner or advanced kitesurfer. And which discipline you prefer: big air, wave, freestyle, freeride or foil.
KITES
The most important part of kitesurfing, is the kitesurf kite. In our range we sell the high performance kites from Airush Kiteboarding. Airush kiteboarding's kites are known for their durable and environmentally friendly products. When buying your kite you should keep in mind the discipline you would like to perform. In our assortment we have for cruising, big-air, oldschool, freestyle and wave a large amount of the best kites.
BAR
What is very important is the bar with lines, because your bar is the handlebar of the kite. During the lesson you will learn how to use the bar and tie the lines to the kite with a special knot. The bar allows you to get more tension in the kite or to change your sailing direction.
It also has two safety systems: the first is to let go of the bar to release the tension and the second is the quick release.
BOARDS
You have several types of kiteboards, each with different characteristics for intended for different types of conditions. Your board is a fundamental part of the kiter and how you experience different styles and levels of kitesurfing, so choosing the right board for you is essential. To purchase a kiteboard, you have come to the right place. We offer the following types of kiteboards:
TWINTIPS
The twintip is the most common type of kiteboard and is a good choice for beginner kiteboarders or advanced kiteboarders. The boards are symmetrical in shape allowing them to be used for different disciplines such as freeride, freestyle, big-air, light wind or waves. An ideal model for beginners is the Airush Switch, it is also often used in kitesurfing courses so you are already used to the board, therefore making it an easy beginner board. The Airush Switch comes standard with a handle and fins. The cheaper models have a wood core, which makes the board slightly heavier than a carbon core, which are often the more expensive models. We offer boards starting at 599 euros from Airush.
A directional kiteboard is used by advanced kitesurfers to surf waves. These boards are sailed strapless by most kitesurfers, meaning there are no bindings on them. Unlike a twintip kiteboard, a directional kiteboard is not symmetrical, so it has a different nose and tail.
FOIL
Foil kites are the latest innovation in the kitesurfing market and are growing rapidly in popularity. With foil kites, the board does not have direct contact with the water, instead the board uses a foil, which makes you float above the water surface, so to speak. The biggest advantage of foiling is that you can sail on the water with less than 10 knots of wind. Due to the reduced contact with the water you achieve higher speeds and enjoy a smoother ride.
We therefore recommend a helmet and an impact vest.
